“You better werk henny!”

If you haven’t heard of the phenomenal DragRace that has been taking over for the last couple of years then you’re missing out- and we’re not talking about cars here, we’re talking about a fierce competition of charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent. The successful expo that celebrates drag and LGBTQ+ culture since 2015 has returned to the Javits Center from September 6th-8th.

Convention

Immediately upon entering the convention, you’re greeted by a huge sign leading up to the escalator and the infamous pink carpet. There is plenty of walking space between the aisles (considering all the gowns and looks). The entrusted right wall was reserved for photo ops and autographs with some of our favorite Werq The World Queens (Plastique, Aquaria, Naiomi Smalls, etc). The center stage and main event platform was sponsored by TikTok and provided hourly performances, discussions, and tutorials.

Dealers & Aisles

The aisles were equally split between various vendors and drag queen personality meet-and-greet merch booths. From wigs, glitter, fans, nails, and jewelry, the visitors could also get professional makeup and hairstyling. You can even learn a bit of pole dancing! There was also a designated kids area in the back with activities and performances (as this is an all-ages event, but don’t be surprised if you see a whole butt cheek out on the show floor, as we’re giving you a heads up- there was plenty of skin!)

Artist Alley

There were plenty of independent artists as well- artist alley offered candles, pins, fan art. We also spotted a variety of booths offering information on LGBTQ+ groups around the city. A lot of the artists offered a wide variety of art as well, there was something for everyone here. No matter where you walked, you always felt welcomed anywhere you went.

Events & Performances

One of the main events of the con was the first-ever cosplay contest with a grand prize of $2500. The participants were tasked with recreating any of the Drag Race contestant’s looks. Ultimately the Monique Heart in card dress won, but everyone looked stunning! Performances were held every day, with various local and famous queens, while Sunday hosted a party with RuPaul as a DJ!

Pros:

•Extremely welcoming convention. The staff was friendly and helpful especially with the long meet-and-greet lines

•Space felt open - a huge difference from how claustrophobic Javits feels during NYCC

•Easy to navigate and locate

•A decent sized lounge area to take a break/sit

•A bar and various food vendors on the show floor

Cons:

•Unlike other days, Friday tickets were not sold separately: had to get 3-day to participate on Friday

•Areas that held panels were a little confusing to identify

•The con hours felt a bit short: Friday-4pm to 8 pm, Saturday-10am to 6 pm, Sunday - 10 am to 4 pm

•VIP perks seemed a bit blurred. Most instances they simply let those ticket holders cut in line (like a fast pass?) and let access to the show floor an hour early. It’s more of a collectible (and Mama Ru gets to sign it). If you were looking for a blocked off lounge and bar-this is not that type of VIP ticket.

Overall this convention is complete fun and joy. It lets attendees embrace themselves for who they are as well as encourages experimentation and craftiness. For 3 days attendees get charged with fierce energy of drag queens and drag culture, celebrating what unites LGBTQ+. Whether you went to go meet the queens, buy some merch, perform, get insight on the industry or simply to check it out- you’ll find the smoothest experience at this con.
